For the past year, my studio work has involved obsessive repetition and fragmentation of the Farsi language. I consider this to be practice. Born in Iran, raised in India, and educated in the US, I have long lived in a constant state of duality. Writing in Farsi has become a grounding element in my work. Whether integrated directly onto the surface or guiding the shapes I cut out of wood, the layering of Farsi text in my work speaks to this duality. My latest series of work is called The Alphabets, where visually related letters are grouped and presented as families in sculptural form.
In my language, مهمون (mehmoon) means “guest”.
